Private label from Thailand: tuna and pineapple under your brand, from one container

Updated:

A Thai plant packs tuna and pineapple under a retail chain's or a distributor's own brand, and its minimum order is one 20ft container. For tuna that is 2,100 cartons, for pineapple 1,300 to 1,500 cartons per SKU. You agree the label design with the plant. Pineapple enters Kazakhstan on an EAEU declaration of conformity; tuna also needs veterinary control. The first step is to pick your SKUs and request samples and specifications.

Suppose you are a category manager at a retail chain or a large distributor, planning an own-brand canned range: tuna in oil and pineapple. You are sourcing it from Thailand, and the first thing to settle is how much you have to order at once.

In 2023 one of Kazakhstan's large grocery chains sold 708 products under its own brands, and about 55% of them were made in Kazakhstan, according to Kursiv (in Russian). The imported part of such a range turns on two things: the size of the minimum order and the documents the import needs.

What one container holds

Speaking to Kursiv in 2023, the chief executive of an international retail chain's Kazakh business described talks with a local producer about own-label rice: the producer's minimum order would have covered her company's needs for ten years.

For private-label tuna and pineapple, the minimum order is measured in containers. From the Siam Signature catalogue, October 2026:

TunaPineapple
Sizes160 g (112 g drained), 140 g (98 g drained)565 g (340 g drained)
Minimum order2,100 cartons, one 20ft containerone 20ft container per SKU, 1,300 to 1,500 cartons

When we price the order, we confirm what counts as a pineapple SKU (cut, packing medium, grade) and agree combined shipments of different SKUs. A pineapple carton holds 12 or 24 cans, and shelf life is 24 months. For tuna, we confirm cans per carton and shelf life when we send the specification: you need both figures to plan the order and stock turnover.

Pineapple is seasonal, with the next shipments in Q4 2026. Whether an own-brand order makes it into those shipments depends on the label lead time, which we check with the plant.

What the brand owner chooses

Tuna comes as chunks in sunflower oil, 160 g or 140 g, or in oil with chilli, 140 g. Every can has an easy-open lid. Pineapple has more options: slices, broken slices or chunks; Choice or Standard grade; natural juice, or extra light, light or heavy syrup; an easy-open or standard lid; cartons of 12 or 24 cans.

For Kazakhstan the label needs Kazakh and Russian text and the EAC mark. Ask about the label lead time and the minimum print run when you start agreeing the design with the plant, before you place the order.

Pineapple enters on an EAEU declaration

Pineapple is a plant product, so veterinary control does not apply. It is imported on an EAEU declaration of conformity under three technical regulations: TR CU 021/2011 on food safety, TR CU 022/2011 on labelling and TR CU 005/2011 on packaging safety. The Kazakh importer, or a person authorised by the manufacturer, accepts the declaration on the basis of test reports on product samples from an accredited laboratory, and a conformity assessment body registers it. We prepare the manufacturer's documents for the declaration.

A pineapple shipment travels with a bill of lading, a packing list, a Chamber-certified invoice and certificate of origin, and a Pink form (food, fruit and vegetable certificate). A fumigation certificate is added if required.

Tuna goes through veterinary control

Tuna takes more steps. Prepared or preserved fish, heading 1604 of the EAEU Commodity Nomenclature, is on the list of goods subject to veterinary control on import (Customs Union Commission Decision No. 317, Section II, item 73). It needs a veterinary certificate and an import permit, and the plant must be on the register of third-country plants from which imports into the EAEU are permitted. Under TR EAEU 040/2016 on the safety of fish and fish products (in Russian), every shipment enters with a veterinary certificate from the competent authority of the country of dispatch.

The register is updated: some Thai plants were removed from it in 2022, and some entries carry temporary restrictions. So we check the plant's status before you order, and we advise printing the tuna labels only after that check.

The plant holds GMP and HACCP certificates from Thailand's Department of Fisheries, valid until 25 December 2026. For a shipment leaving after that date, we tell you which certificates will be valid on the day it ships.

For tuna the catalogue lists the same documents: bill of lading, packing list, invoice, certificate of origin and Pink form. It adds a Livestock Certificate, which the catalogue notes is not a fishery certificate, and the GMP and HACCP certificates. Before you order, check with us which document will serve as the EAEU veterinary certificate for your shipment.

No stock in Kazakhstan: shipped from Thailand to order

Shipments go directly from Thailand against your order, by sea or air. Prices depend on volume, product mix and delivery terms, and we send an estimate after your request. Uzbekistan is not an EAEU member, so the document set there is different, and we confirm it for each shipment.

Samples before the first container

A starter range of one tuna size and one pineapple SKU takes two containers. Samples come first: we send them once you have picked the products, together with specifications, ingredient lists and plant certificates.

In the request form, tick “Under your brand”, list your SKUs in the “Comment” field and ask about the tuna plant's register status.
